Numerical Analysis

Numerical simulations allow detailed insights into physical phenomena and important state variables, which are not accessible experimentally. GASFLOW permits a deterministic analysis of dispersion and combustion processes in complex three-dimensional geometries. The outcome of an accident with burnable gas depends on many parameters and complex physics. Therefore a consistent and mechanistic analysis procedure was developed for GASFLOW

  • to predict accident progress and consequences,
  • to develop efficient mitigation measures,
  • to support development of safe technologies for combustible gases, and
  • to provide a reliable data base for rules, codes and standards.

The risk analysis procedure addresses four main steps which are combustible mixture generation, hazard evaluation, combustion simulation and consequence evaluation. Such a mechanistic and self-consistent risk analysis – which is far beyond running a standard CFD code - can be performed for a wide range of accident scenarios.
